It took longer than he had hoped, but back to back rounds of 64 on the weekend secured Davis' 20th PGA Tour victory - the Children's Miracle Network Classic, played at Disney's Magnolia and Palm courses located in Orlando, Florida. With the win, Davis joins a special group of players that have played their way into a lifetime exemption on the PGA Tour. Only 33 players in the Tour's history have earned this privilege and currently, only four players under the age of fifty have 20 or more PGA Tour wins to their credit. Along with Davis, this group includes Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Vijay Singh.
Number 20 certainly didn't come easy; Davis had to make clutch up and down pars over the final two holes to edge out tour rookie Tommy Gainey by a single shot. "You feel bad for him, you know, but he came so close - it would have been a great story," Davis said after his round, "that's what's so incredible about our Tour, there are so many great players that can just pop out of nowhere and turn it on. 64, 64, 64, that's all you see, these guys shoot it every day, and it's impressive." Impressive also describes Davis' play for the week, great ball striking coupled with solid putting combined for three consecutive no-bogey rounds over the Magnolia course and only one bogey for the entire tournament. "I putted extremely well the last two days, I was real patient with it and they started going in this weekend. Every putt seemed to be right in the middle and I was very fortunate to get away with a win, especially because Tommy played great."
So where does number 20 rank? Davis tried to put it in perspective following the round, "Well, for another hour I'm going to try to act like it's not a big deal (laughs) and hold it together. But you know, it's a big win for me. But I've been saying all along I want to get to 20 because you can't get to 21 or 22 or 23 until you get to 20, and 20's been a long time coming. Twenty sounds good, but 21 will sound way better."
